Sport In Action Hands-over Newly Constructed Basketball and Netball Courts.
On November 8th, 2024, Sport in Action (SIA) and its international partners (Wallace Group and Volunteer Zambia Foundation) officially handed over newly constructed Basketball and Netball courts at Chinika Secondary School in Kanyama. The handover marks a significant achievement in SIA’s contribution towards sport development,through infrastructure development.
Previously, the School which also serves as one of SIAs hubsite within Lusaka only had a basketball court which was in a bad state hence exposing participants to risk of injuries each time the facility was accessed.
Speaking on behalf of the Chinika Secondary Headteacher was the Deputy Head, Mr Llyod Yamboto, he expressed gratitude and excitement at the prospect and possibilities that will come with new facility,”This facility built by SIA and it’s international partners serves as a beacon of hope for our young people who are constantly surrounded by illicit activities in the community” he stated. “We are also promising to take care of this facility,so that we can increase it’s life span.” He added.
Gideon Mumba, who was Represented Netball Zambia, emphasized community access, urging the school administration to create a conducive timetable for easy flow of activities for the children and young people.He further mentioned that,future National Team Netball players will come from this community, if children are supported by the school.
Furthermore, Administration Manager George Kakomwe from Sport In Action, spoke on behalf of the Executive Director, he highlighted the organisations commitment to sports-driven social change through projects focusing on rehabilitating and building new facilities which in-turn serve as a platform to foster social change by using sports as a tool to mobilize the community.
Lastly, Sammi Mustafi, Speaking on behalf of Ace2Zambia, Volunteer Zambia and the University of Bath’s via a sent in Voice note, encouraged the young people to take good care of the facility and praised the great working partnership between SIA and their international partners. “Now Chinika has two separate sports facility(Basketball and Netball) where two sports can simultaneously be played” he said. He concluded by thanking all the sponsors who contributed towards the construction of the sports facility.
