Launched by FIFA in 2005, Football For Hope is an initiative contributing to social development around the world. The support provided by FIFA through Football For Hope has already benefited more than 200 programs in over 60 countries across all continents. The initiative includes an annual funding scheme, capacity building, exchange opportunities, material support and selected infrastructure projects. Through Sport in Action, the program runs in Kabwe, Livingstone and Lusaka. During the course of the project, social issues such as; children’s rights, HIV and AIDS awareness, teenage pregnancy, early marriage and drug abuse prevention are explored in detail. These issues have been shared with teachers, community coaches and peer leaders in targeted areas through football training, matches, tournaments, festivals and classroom sessions, with a multiplier effect having been achieved.
The current activities under the Football For Hope project include tournaments, leagues, children’s camps, festivals, life skills sessions and forums.
“The Football For Hope project has allowed an opportunity for children from different places to learn about life skills, including HIV and AIDS information. The project on a yearly basis brings joy to the children participating and their communities. Children are often from less privileged backgrounds and are given the opportunity to interact with children and leaders who they may not often have the opportunity to interact with outside of their community.” Mwape Konsolo, Programs & Development Manager Sport in Action Coordinator Football For Hope Programme
