SIA UNDERTAKES 14 DAYS OF MEETING TEACHERS FOR UPCOMING COMPETITIONS ON SGBV IN 6 DISTRICTS OF NORTHERN PROVINCE UNDER THE NATWAMPANE (SGBV PREVENT) PROJECT
The Sport In Action Kasama team has taken a trip to the districts of Luwingu, Lupososhi, Lunte, Mporokoso, Nsama and Kaputa to hold orientation meetings with teachers in schools and District Education Board (DEBS) officers about school competitions to be hosted under the NATWAMPANE Project. Other related issues under CSE in schools were also discussed at these meetings. During these engagements, SIA focused on teachers who were trained by Sports In Action under comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in 2020 – 2021.
Under the NATWAMPANE Project, SIA will hold School Competitions which will involve pupils competing in different competitions such as quizzes, art, debate, essay writing, poems etc. The Competitions will be conducted with messages of SGBV. The targeted population for these competitions are pupils in schools and the general community.
Level one in the competition will be called the School level. This will be an inter-class level where pupils will compete in different categories and the best pupils will be picked who will then compete at Zone Level. At Zone Level, the best students will be selected after competing to form a team that will represent the Zone at District Level. District teams will then go on to compete at Provincial Level. SIA is targeting to conduct these activities in the June and October School calendar.
SIA is specifically looking at targeting adolescents in this project in order to raise awareness on issues of SGBV. Going by data obtained from the District Health Office, high numbers of teen pregnancies and STIs are being recorded each year. Early marriages and school drop-out figures have also been a major concern. It is for this reason that Sport In Action has decided to use the school competitions to drive awareness on issues of SGBV and CSE.
