Volunteers Meet Hub-Site Coordinators and Visit Sites and Placements
On June 6 2023, the volunteers who had signed up to be a part of the Sport in Action and Volunteer Zambia project gathered at Bank of Zambia sports complex for their induction ceremony. The volunteers were met by their respective Hub-Site coordinators with whom they discussed expectations and plans on how to successfully hold sessions in their respective sites. The coordinators also provided the volunteers with information on the objectives of the project and the role they would play in promoting sport development in respective communities.
The project is a collaborative effort between Sport in Action and Volunteer Zambia, among other partners. Its main objective is to foster sports development through grassroots sports such as football, netball, and basketball. However, the primary focus is on the girl child, ensuring that girls are given equal opportunities to participate and develop their skills in these sports.
On Wednesday June 7th, 2023, the volunteers visited all the Hub-sites in Lusaka to introduce and familiarize themselves with their respective sites. The volunteers were taken around the sites and shown the available equipment and facilities. They also interacted with the community members who were present and were encouraged to establish good relationships with the locals.
The Hub-sites are all-inclusive, meaning that everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of age, gender, or ability. However, the project places special emphasis on the girl child due to the historically unequal participation of girls in sports.
It is hoped that the project will help promote healthy living, a sense of community, and create opportunities for people to develop their sporting skills and potentially identify talented individuals who can represent Zambia in the future. The project also aims to empower girls and encourage more girls to participate in sports, thus enhancing gender equality.
The Sport in Action and Volunteer Zambia project is an exciting initiative that seeks to promote sports development in Lusaka through grassroots sports. The volunteers’ induction ceremony and visit to the Hub-sites are critical in establishing good relationships with the community members, providing information, and identifying potential challenges that may need to be addressed. The project’s focus on the girl child is laudable and can potentially have a significant impact on promoting gender equality in sports.
